Sir Castleton in Final
From G. K. YULE Sir Castleton ensured himself of a start in the $60,000 Trotters’ Final on Saturday when he unleashed all of his great staying powers to win the Third Trotters’ Heat.
His chances looked fairly hopeless in the early stages when he was back with
About Now, some 20 lengths from the leaders when the field settled. Worthy Sox set a strong pace from War Talent and McShane, with gaps to the others. The field bunched a little inside the last 1600 m,
when Sir Castleton moved up soon after and flushed McShane out from the rails
and so obtained a cover. McShane headed off Worthy Sox starting the run home, with Sir Castleton challenging strongly wider out. Sir Castleton won decisively by a length and a quarter, with About Now making up many lengths to cut McShane out of second
by a short length. Kenwood Song ensured his place in the final 12 by finishing a close fourth, ahead of Worthy Sox and War Talent. Last November’s Dominion Handicap winner, Cal Brydon, could do no better than tenth and will miss the final.
