Renewed troubles
NZPA New Delhi Anti-Government Assamese agitators set fire ,to four-Government buildings, a highway bridge and a police station at the week-end as three people were slain in renewed ethnic and political clashes in Assam state, said reports from the area.
Assamese natives clashed with Bengali settlers in Nowgong, Karbi Anglong and Kamrup districts. Three people were reported killed when an armed gang raided a hamlet 656 km north-east of Calcutta.
According to state officials, more than 1700 people have died and more than 430,000 lost their homes in bloody fighting in Assam since last January. Some reports, however, put the fatality toll at more than 2500.
