... Fraser to retire?

NZPA Canberra The outgoing Australian Prime Minister, Malcolm Fraser, yesterday gave a strong indication that he w'ould retire from Federal politics. In a message read to the Liberal Party leadership meeting in Canberra, Mr Fraser said that he was “inclined to the view that past Prime Ministers should not hang around.”

“It is so easy to become an embarrassment to their successors,” the message said. The statement was read to the meeting by John Howard. Mr Fraser did not attend the meeting because he said that it was not only important for the party to be “doing its own thing” free from his influence, but to be seen to be doing so. As yet he had made no firm plans for the future. He

believed his standing down as leader offered the Liberal Party the opportunity to emerge totally united as an effective and efficient political force. “Standing down involved a judgement about future events, not about the past. I urge the party to seize the opportunity with both hands and with all the vigour it can command.”
