Proposal ‘not essential’
An application for a Merivale Lane fashion wholesaling business in a residential zone has been rejected
by a Christchurch City Council planning hearing panel. The owners of a grocery shop, a permitted zone use, wanted to convert it to a wholesaling business showroom and offices. The hearing panel said that such a use was not essential to the neighbourhood in the vicinity of 60-62 Merivale Lane. Councillors said that the business would fit comfortable into any commercial or industrial zone. Motor camp Mr G. W. Cruickshank, of
158 Travis Road, has told council planners that he will apply for a motor camp on his property within a few months. Some residents near the property, at the corner of Barkers Road, have objected to the storage of contractor’s machinery and old workers’ huts on the site. A camping ground is permitted in a Residential 1 zone as a conditional use. Such a camp would not be permitted until a sewer line is laid in Barkers Road that could service the complex
