Minister orders report on TV sackings

PA Wellington The Minister of Broadcasting, Dr Shearer, has asked for a report on the sacking of two performers from the television show, “That’s Country", but he cannot do anything about the sacking. The Broadcasting Act bars the Minister from becoming involved in internal matters such as sackings.

Dr Shearer, a country and western fan, has asked the Broadcasting Corporation for the report as a matter of information. Two Labour members of Parliament will ask the corporation for an explanation. Mr Frank O’Flynn, Labour’s justice spokesman, and Mr Jonathon Hunt, broadcasting spokesman, said yesteray that the two entertainers had been sacked at a moment’s notice by the producers allegedly for protesting that “one of the producers is also manager-agent for an entertainer who is appearing on the show.” “The only ‘explanation’ given so far appears to be that the complaints are a case of the pot calling the kettle black. That certainly will not do,” Mr O’Flynn said.
