Smoke was from dump

The haze of smoke which drifted over much of Christchurch yesterday came from a persistent fire at the Heathcote rubbish dump. Four fire engines were engaged at the dump from 12.23 p.m. until early last evening. The fire at no stage threatened to get out of control

A bulldozer will be brought -in this morning to “open up” the burning refuse and. enable the smouldering fire' to be completely put out.
