Audi Quattro publicity helps Subaru sales

Publicity’ generated by the West German Audi Quattro about the advantages of four-wheel-drive in a saloon car is starting to rub off to the advantage of the Japanese Subaru. Motor Holdings (Wholesale), Ltd. claims Subaru dealers are saying that the success of the four-wheel-

drive Quattro in rallies has highlighted the extra safety ofered by having all four wheels under traction. At present there is only one $87,000 Audi Quattro in New Zealand, but the Subaru is New Zealand-assembled and the 1.8-litre four-wheel-drive saloon and station waggon retail around $15,600 and

$16,000 respectively. The latest range of station waggons is just about to be introduced and they will feature a roofline that is upswept just above the Bpillar to the rear of the vehicle. The lifted roof provides an additional 40mm of headroom for rear seat passen-

gers. The new dual-range waggons are also fitted with larger diameter clutches, the diameter being increased by 25mm to 225 mm. The final reduction gear ratio has been changed from 3.889 to 3.700 to improve petrol consumption and reduce engine noise at higher road (as opposed to off-road) speeds.
