Milkmen will deliver the Sunday joint
NZPA London Britons will be able to buy New Zealand lamb from the milkman next month. Unigate. Britain’s biggest dairy group, has decided to offer the lamb for a fourweek trial period. If it catches on. milkmen , will deliver the lamb regularly with the bacon, eggs, sausages, potatoes, bread, and juice they already sell with the milk, cream, and butter. About 400 milkmen are taking part in the trial. A leg of New Zealand lamb will cost £1.25 (SNZ2.6O) a pound, about 25 pence (53c) more than it is selling for in the shops. The lamb will have to be ordered from the milkman in advance. Unigate started selling beef last August. The decision to sell lamb, too, has been welcomed by the New Zealand Meat Board's United Kingdom promotions manager. Mr Christopher Arnold. “We applaud them for their initiative," he said. “While 99 per cent of our lamb will continue to be sold through conventional outlets, there is always room to support people who will try
to find new markets for us. “There is no reason why it should not work." But Unigate’s move has brought an angry reaction from the National Federation of Meat Traders. "The dairy industry is always fighting to keep its monopoly on milk sales against imports of U.H.T. (long life) and fresh milk," said the president, Mr Michael Richardson. “Yet it is able to diversify into areas of trade served by other sectors of the food industry. “The' same argument used by Unigate and other dairy firms against alternative outlets being able to sell milk is just as justified for the other sectors of the food industry. "If the dairy industry wants support in its fight against E.E.C. imports, it must not be hypocritical," Mr Richardson said. Butchers could not survive on “two ounces of ham and a couple of slices of liver" during the week while the milkman delivered the weekend joint. “If this is what Unigate is planning, the sooner we have cheaper French milk to ruin the dairy industry the better," Mr Richardson said.
