NZPA-Reuter Gauhati Indira Gandhi's Congress (I) Party has secured a twothirds majority in Assam's State Assembly amid the worst election bloodshed in Indira's post-independence history. Troops went into action as more violence, sparked by an anti-immigrant campaign.
was reported on Wednesday from several parts of the troubled north-east Indian state. With vote counting almost complete, the Congress (I) Party had won 84 of the 97 seats announced by early yesterday in the 126-seat Assam legislature.
