Last fling a Kiwi winner
Fourteen workers at a Christchurch firm won a total of $102,000 in the Golden Kiwi lottery drawn yesterday with what was to have been their last ticket.
The "Big M" syndicate, which won the first prize of $lOO,OOO and two $lOOO prizes for the tickets closest to the winning number, is made up of members of the general staff at the McVicar Timber Group in Johns Road. After five years of regularly buying tickets and winning only $5O between them, the 14 decided to spend the syndicate's entire kitty. They bought 10 tickets. Discouraged by their failure to win any large prizes
the syndicate had decided the 10 tickets would be their last purchase in the lottery. Yesterday. celebrating their win after work, eight of the members were not so sure. Each of the 14 will receive $7285.71 of the prize.
They first knew of their win when one of the syndicate heard the news on the radio while driving from one branch office to another. He returned to the Johns Road office to tell the others.
Although the group were more than happy to pose for a photograph, they declined to give their names because they did not want to be harassed with telephone calls about their win.
