Flood reports lose town $2M
- Bad news reports about recent flooding in Queenstown cost the town al least 5'2 million, the South Island ’Promotion Association's executive council heard yesterday.
'. The association's chairman. Mr H. J. Walker, told lhe council at a meeting in Christchurch that bad news reports, which highlighted flood damage and road closings. had discouraged tourists from visiting the region, and had been a "disaster" for the town and the South island.
; Council members from Queenstown. Otago. South Westland, and South Canterbury also spoke out against the'damaging effects of news reports about the bad weather. ■ Mr R. Eldershaw. of South Westland, said that the West Coast did not "close down" when it rained. ' "The news media sensationalised the flooding and the Coast suffered from it." he said. ' The Mayor of Geraldine. Mr W. S. Aitken, said that if the news media were fair, they would report that such flooding was unseasonable and unusual during summer.
Councillors were concerned about the lack of positive publicity given to the end of the flooding and the reopening of roads.
The Canterbury Promotion Council's executive officer. Mr Bruce Dunstan, said that flooding would always be dews.
"The answer is not to get the big stick out for the news media a month later,” he said.
