Pupil-teacher ratios
Sir.—lt is a tragedy that the Minister of Education will not employ surplus trained teachers for the benefit of children. The Minister is on record as supporting the increased staffing of schools by "qualitative staffing improvements" based on children's needs. With every day of failure to implement this promise opportunities are missed where children in our schools could so easily benefit from extra teacher hours for specialised and remedial work and from that small amount of individual attention which can pay such dividends. While the Minister says he supports staffing improvements he does nothing about it. It seems a cruel political joke to play on children. It is clear that despite promises, the Government is sticking to the present high teacher-pupil ratios. To employ the 1499 unemployed teachers in areas of special needs would be of vital benefit to our children's education. — Yours, etc..
