Mendis on the mend

Duleep Mendis might yet be able to lead his Sri Lankan cricketers in the tests against New Zealand at Christchurch and Wellington next month. It was feared that Mendis would not be able to play again on the tour after he had a bone in his right hand broken by the first delivery he faced in the match with Canterbury at Lancaster Park on Saturday.

From the previous ball

Dayle Hadlee had dismissed Mithra -Wettimuny. Mendis's introduction to cricket in Christchurch was a nasty, rising delivery, and the Sri Lankan captain retired in some pain. An X-ray revealed the fracture, and the Sri Lankans appeared likely to lose the services of their leader and most experienced batsman. However, minor surgery was carried out on Mendis's

injury yesterday and there is confidence that he will be fit in time for the start of the first test on March 4. There was further relief in the Sri Lankan camp yesterday when the seasoned spin bowler. Somachandra de Silva, was able to return to the field after having a precautionary X-ray. De Silva severely bruised a finger on his right hand attempting to stop a forceful straight drive by Richard Leggat.
