Bidding quiet at Hawarden two-tooth fair

Buyers at the Hawarden ewe fair yesterday concentrated on two-tooths and ewes which were in heavy condition. Except for a few pens of excellent quality sheep, bidding was quiet, particularly for. lighter hill country two-tooths. Prices for two-tooths were back bv an amount similar to the fall at’the Amberley ewe fair on Monday. Some breeders received $l6 less a head compared with last year's sale, but the over-all reduction was $lO to $l2. One well known breeder had a drop of only $5. Selling was slightly harder than at the Amberley fair and 10 pens of two-tooths were passed in out of more than 70 offered. Buying power came mostly from North Canterbury and Mid-Can-terburv. although Mid-Canter-burv buyers did not support the sale as much as other years. The bulk of the two-tooths were presented in very good order, in spite of the recent dry season. Little interest was shown in the lighter hill-country twotooths. The Clifton Cup. presented annually to what two judges consider to be the best pen of sheep in the sale, was won by D. J. McFadden (Parklands). This pen of Corriedales was later sold for $31.80. The top price was $36.80. received by R. J. and R. L. Warwick ’(Glendochart) who topped the market last year with $42. This pen was bought by a .Mid-Canterbury farmer who competed strongly with a farmer from North Canterbury. The same farmers had bid against each other keenly for the top pen at the Amberley fair. Mr and Mrs Warwick sold other pens at $3O and $23.40. and Mr McFadden had other sales at $26 and $21.80. Only three pens of two-tooths made over $3O and 19 made more than $2O. .compared with about 26 sales of more than $3O last year. Other leading sales included E. J. Miller and Company, Ltd, Allandale. with three pens at $2O to $23.80. Quigley Farm (Kingsmoor) four pens’ at $l9 to $21.80,' V. B. Jensen (Parkview) at $19.80 and $23, and F. K. Forrester (Heatherdale) four sales at $l7 to $24. W. A. and A. W. Booker (Dalmeny Park) sold t’wo pens at $19.40 and $23, and F. E. Booker (Longfield) sold one at $23.80. Many sales of two-tooths were from $l7 to $2O. and light sheep sold down to $l4. Some excellent quality heavy ewes, with good mouths, were, a feature of the adult section. Buyers placed a strong emphasis on condition. Several sales were made from $l7 to $lB. L. J. O'Carroll (Waitohi Downs) received $18.40 for an attractive, well-presented line of five-year Corriedales, and P. A. Carr (Glenallan) sold a line of five-year ewes at $lB. J. K. Forester (Black Hills) received $17.60 and E. J. Miller and Company, Ltd. $16.80 for five-year ewes. A. F. G. Blakely (Clifton) sold a line of five-year ewes at $16.50 and Tenterden Downs (Hawarden) received $l6 for a line of similar age. Lighter aged ewes sold from $8 to $l2. The two-tooth yarding totalled 6276 (compared 'with 6168 last vear), and adults numbered 7989 (7766).
