The economy

Sir, — Keith Burgess (February 14, 1983) talks of economies strangling themselves arming for war. What future have we to offer our children while this continues? Our times are stigmatised by our blind indifference to the fate of our Earth. We say it is “too risky” to take the first steps towards disarmament, but who feels “safe” in the world as it is? Our industries continue to make baubles and bombs and our children may be excused for acting as if there is no tomorrow. — Yours, etc.. JILL WILCOX. February 14, 1983.

Sir, Thanks to lan Templeton for the latest in scholarly reviews of the financial situation. It lacked only the random pattern of a handful of thrown bones to round out the mumbo jumbo. What an awful thing that the Government should “monetise” our Budget deficit. The horror of a democratically elected government presuming to issue our money instead of using credit created by someone else. At least they had the decency to “raise the trading bank ratio” and pay for a bank overdraft in a proper way. It all helps to build the myth that government-produced money is inflationary and that privately created credit can be held below an,inflationary level. — Yours, etc., JIM TIMINGS. February 13. 1983.
