Nigeria begins deportee round-up
NZPA London The Nigerian authorities had begun arresting illegal immigrants who failed to obey a Government order last month to leave the country. rounding up more than 100 of them in the northern city of Kano, the official News Agency of Nigeria reported.
Some of those arrested had already been deported while others were still being expelled. None would be prosecuted. An estimated one million Ghanaians have already returned home under an order by the Nigerian Government expelling illegal immigrants that came into force on February 1. The order also affects thousands of people from other West African countries. N.A.N. did not give the nationalities of those arrested in Kano.
Nigerian police began searching hotels, rooming houses and eating places where aliens either worked or gathered within a few hours of the expulsion order coming into force. The Nigerian authorities said last week that they would arrest illegal immigrants who remained behind in Nigeria in defiance of the order.
