Risk of burn-offs greater in N.I.

Uncontrolled land burnoffs are apparently less a problem in Canterbury than in the North Island. Concern about the number of burn-offs getting out of hand this summer, particularly in the Wellington area, has led the chief fire control officer of the Forest Service,

Mr Neil Cooper, to suggest stricter controls for rural fire permits. He said that other east coast regions, including North Canterbury, had also been running a high fire risk since November. The fire control officer of the Forest Service in Canterbury. Mr Win Leef, said that

the local problem was not verv serious. Weather conditions could change during the critical February-March period, but at this stage local conservancy staff were not considering measures such as the total fire ban imposed in Canterbury counties last

February. Higher temperatures and stronger winds had caused more burn-off problems in the North Island, he said. The Canterbury countryside was "browning off." but Balmoral was the only State forest area still rated as high fire risk.
