Fire risk high in many forest districts

Wellington reporter The serious danger of forest fires throughout most of New Zealand has led the Forest Service to publish a list of the special danger spots. More fine weather had been predicted and rising temperatures, low humidity and strong winds would push the danger very high in many places, said the Fire Service’s chief fire control officer. Mr N. Cooper. The only real exception to the conditions was the West Coast. Mr Cooper asked the pub-

lic to report any smoke or fire to the nearest Forest Service, Fire Service or police office. Safety precautions were being taken on all forest work sites and staff were on standby nationally. South Island areas at risk were—- • Naseby, North Otago - very high. • Ashley and Hamner. Canterbury - very high. • Eyrewell and Balmoral. Canterbury — extreme. • Golden Downs. Motueka and Hira. Nelson — very high to extreme.
