Polynesian capital
PA Auckland Auckland has been reinstated as the world’s Polynesian capital. The co-ordinator of a study of migration and employment in the South Pacific. Dr John Connell, said in the Demographic Society's "Population Review" that Papeete’s Polynesian population w-as 76.112 and Auckland's. 58.090. The figures were incorrect. Dr Connell has said, from
Noumea. "It's my mistake." he said. The Auckland figure did not include Maoris, and the Papeete figures included about 8000 Europeans. Dr Connell said there were about 68.000 Polynesians in Papeete, the Tahitian capital of French Polynesia. The 1981 census puts Auckland's Polynesian population al 121.540! Of that. Maoris accounted for 63.560 and the Pacific Islanders 57,980.
