Jobless teachers
Sir. — I am one of the many primary school teachers who. through no fault of their own. are now unemployed. I trained for three years and have taught for another four years. Because I am now unable to teach anywhere in New Zealand, I am considered immobile and therefore have little chance of obtaining a position. The Government has obviously made a gross error when predicting the number of teachers required. But why should we have to suffer because of this? Many children will be in classes of 35-40. when there are usually spare classrooms-available. This does not make sense. Many children could benefit from our skills, such as involving us in the reading recovery programme which has been planned, but has insufficient teachers to carry it out. It is deplorable that the Government is wasting millions of dollars through serious mismanagement. How long will this situation continue? j - Yours, etc., CLAIRE BILLENS. February 6, 1983.
