East well ahead in twilight cricket

East-Shirley is virtually assured of winning the men s section of “The Press” twilight cricket tournament after beating Burnside-West last Monday evening. With two rounds remaining East leads St Albans and High School Old Boys by 36 points. East has the bye next Monday arid is to meet St Albans in its last game. Damian D'Oliveira. Howard Morel and Alan Laurent all retired as East scored 133 for four to beat BurnsideWest by nine runs. St Albans had the bye and was joined in second equal position by Old Boys when they had a comfortable win at Suburban’s expense. Murray Mowat, of Old Boys, emulated D’Oliveira’s feat of reaching a maximum 40 runs.

A record of a vastly different kind was equalled by Brian Butler (Supporters) who had 66 runs thrashed from his five overs by his former club, Lancaster Park. The previous sole holder of that dubious distinction was Steve McNally, of Riccarton. But Supporters recovered to gain an 11-run victory over Park.

Country and Marist had the first twilight tie for three

seasons, each finishing with 108 runs for the loss of seven wickets. Country became the winner on a count-back because of its faster scoring rate in the first 10 overs.

St Albans slipped ahead of Riccarton, which had the bye, by decisively beating Sydenham in the women’s section. St Albans is now three points in front of Riccarton. and they are well dear of the other sides. The Lion Breweries “player of the, day” awards went to Brent Small (Old Boys) and Bonnie Paniora (Park).
