Greek shield remade

NZPA Athens Experts have reconstructed the ceremonial shield of King Philip of Macedon. father of Alexander the Great, from tiny fragments of gold, ivory and glass, an archaeologist. Mr Manolis Andronikos has said. Mr Andronikos. who five years ago announced the discovery of King Philip's tomb in the Northern Greek village of Vergina. said in a lecture at the Athens office of the British Council, that he hoped the shield would be put on display in the museum of nearby Salonika in the next few months.

A young man standing over a kneeling woman forms the centrepiece of the circular shield. Its rim is decorated with ivory spirals and intricately worked pieces of gold.
