Motorist charged after treble fatality
PA Hamilton A Gordonton labourer, aged 30. charged with causing the deaths of a Gordonton couple and their baby while driving with an excess blood-alcohol level, pleaded not guilty when he appeared in the District Court at Hamilton yesterday. Jackson Puke (also known as Jackson Te Puke) was remanded by Judge M. J. Green on bail to March 3 for trial.
He also pleaded not guilty to causing injury to the dead couple's second child, driving while disqualified and careless use of a motor vehicle. The alleged offences were said to have taken place at Gordonton on January 5. Puke had earlier pleaded guilty to two charges of drinking-driving relating to incidents in Christchurch in 1980 and 1981. On these charges he was remanded to the same date for a probation report and sentence.
