New cardinal invested

NZPA-Reuter Vatican City The Roman. Catholic Metropolitan of New Zealand, Archbishop T. S. Williams, was one of 18 new cardinals invested by Pope John Paul yesterday? He becomes only the third New Zealander to reach the church's second-highest rank. The new members of the Sacred College of Cardinals, the supreme body in the Church, received their red four-peaked cardinals’ hats from the Pope at an elaborate ceremony in the Vatican.

Their election swells the college to 138 members, of whom 120 will be eligible to vote in papal elections. Only those over 60 cannot vote. Archbishop Williams is 52. Announcing the names of the new cardinals last month, the Pope said they reflected the universality of the Church. The new appointments include two African churchmen, one North American, two South Americans, two Asians, six West Europeans, and four East Europeans. ,
