Trade commissioner in Japan advocated
PA Rotorua New Zealand needs a trade commissioner in Japan, according to the Forest Service. The director of its Utilisation and Development Division, Mr T. A. Foley, said little was being done to exploit the commercial opportunity that existed for timber sales to Japan. 1 Mr Foley said North Americans and Chileans were in Japan in strength, and unless New Zealand did something it would be pushed out of the market. "The wood will not sell itself." he said.
The initial breakthrough had been achieved; New Zealand radiata pine was being sold to Japan for building, but Japanese builders, architects. engineers, and the public still had to be convinced. Mr Foley was New Zealand's Trade Commissioner in Australia from 1956 to 1960.
