Blenheim reporter iA young man is missing, presumed drowned, after a four-metre runabout boat caught fire and exploded near Mahikapawa Arm in Pelorus Sound on Sunday evening. The man is Mr Kevin Stewart Page, aged 28, of Derby Street, Nelson. Two other occupants of the boat, Miss Joanna Hewitt, aged 18, and Mr Page’s nephew, Stewart Page, aged nine, both of Stoke, were both able to reach the shore where they were taken care of by members of their family and friends. The boat caught fire about
8 p.m. and the blaze was seen by people in Wakaretu Bay, Havelock, who told the Havelock police. Mr Page was last seen struggling in the water near the burning boat before disappearing below the surface. A number of boats and dinghys were used almost immediately in a search for Mr Page. The search was resumed at 5 a.m. yesterday but was called off about 8 a.m. when all possible stretches of the coastline in the area had been traversed. Divers are expected to make a further search of the immediate area of the accident today.
