Kathy Glass triumphs at odds of 33-to-one
From

elson Twelve months ago the Richmond trainer. Noel Berkett. produced Chesapeake to win the Trotting Stakes at Addington Raceway. This year he hopes to be represented in the same race by Kathy Glass, winner of the Tasman Liquormart Handicap at Richmond Park yesterday. Berkett intends to further her preparation for the classic in March with a race at Addington on Friday night. Kathy Glass, which is raced by Mrs Dawn Berkett. made an inglorious race debut on Saturday, causing trouble before the start and then breaking and falling after about 400 m. As a result
she was at odds of almost 33-to-one yesterday. Katjiy Glass set all of the pace, being challenged by Reaady Money from the 1200 m. Once she shook off Ready Money, the favourite. Lucius came at her but she responded in fine style and won by a long head. Lucius was a length and a quarter in the front of Majestic Cord, with a long break to the others, headed by Whistling Willie. After a spell away from the winning scene for almost three years the Westport owner-trainer, Keith Powell, enjoyed a welcome change of fortune when True Charles won the Dudley Harrison Handicap. He was driven by Kevin Townley, who with his father, "Doody,” secured a
half interest in the highly promising four-year-old byTrue Averil from Heather Lane after the race. "Doody" Townley will prepare him and drive him in his engagements at the Marlborough meeting next weekend after which he will race in Canterbury. “He is the first winner I have had since Jersey Boy and I think he is the best I have had since Lady Jess." said Powell. True Charles was always prominent and he showed up wide out at the straight entrance. He just coasted over the final 200 m to win by two lengths from 01 Fella and Bahrein. Mr Don Fowler has been waiting about 12 years for his first win and he finally
broke through yesterday when Miss Dee Bee came out on top in the Brian Register Handicap. Mr Fowler, the present treasurer and a past-presi-dent of the Nelson Club, said he had not had many race starters, but he had tried a number of horses without success until yesterday. Colin de Filippi for whom it was his third success for the day and his fifth for the meeting, had Miss Dee Bee handily enough engaged all the way and he worked her towards the leaders 200 m out. She. came on solidly to win by more than a length from Titian Gold, which was badly checked near the 800 m, and My Idea, which also came from well back.
