Weak record by South Islanders
By
J. J. BOYLE
The South Island had only one winner (Bongo Boy) in three days’ racing at this year’s Wellington Cup meeting. And Auditory, with a fourth in the Trentham Stakes, was the only South Island stake earner on the third day of the meeting on Saturday. Auditory carried the colours of Brian and Lorraine Anderton into fourth in the weight-for-age Trentham Stakes. The finish of the race was dominated by Bound to Honour and Rosetown Lad, both runners for Te Awamutu stables.
The Wellington Derby winner, Rosetown Lad, gave it a good try for an all-the-way victory, but Bound to Honour was patiently nursed for the last challenge by Chris McNab, and she came out on top by a long neck. Bound to Honour is trained by Bill Sanders for Messrs Robin Miller, Barry McLeish, Rob McLeish, and Murray Shaw, who race her on lease from Mr Jack Macky, of the Pirongia Stud. Bound to Honour won the Great Northern Oaks and four weight-for-age races last season, and one of her earlier wins this season was in the Auckland Racing Club’s Queen Elizabeth Handicap. A mare of her qualities from the same family as the yearling filly which was sold for $700,000 at Trentham last week will be one of the gems of future stud books. Bound to Honour’s immediate future in racing is not yet certain, but a Sydney Cup start is a possibility. A decision will be left to Bill Sanders, who has been in indifferent health, and was not at Trentham for a highly popular win on Saturay. Sanders won the Trentham Stakes last year with Loughanure.
