Indonesia strictly regulates imports

NZPA-Reuter Jakarta Declining exports in the wake of world economic recession have forced Indonesia to impose strict import regulations to preserve foreign exchange, the Trade Minister, Mr Radius Prawiro, has said. He said that imports of non-essential agricultural products, meats, fruits, beverages, and alcoholic drinks would be limited or temporarily halted. A government report last month said Indonesia’s bal-

ance-of-payments deficit was expected to reach SUSS.I billion (SNZ7.OB billion) by March .31, the end of the 1982-1983 fiscal year. The deficit was SUSI.S9 billion (SNZ2.2 billion) in the first half of the fiscal year. Government concern about dwindling foreign exchange was underlined last month by the imposition of a sixfold increase in foreign travel tax for Indonesians and foreign residents. The tax is now about SUS22O dollars (SNZ3OS) per person.
