Twilight cricket contest

Although it has yet to have the bye, East-Shirley is in an almost unassailable position to win the men's section of ‘ The Press" twilight cricket tournament.

East-Shirley had its eighth win in as many rounds at Hospital Corner on Monday evening and, with an advantage of 22 points over its nearest rival. St Albans, it seems certain to regain the title it won in the 1980-81 season. St Albans also has to have the bye in one of the last three rounds. Riccarton. the title-holder, and St Albans are having a close struggle in the women's competition. St Albans scored the highest total in the men’s section. It managed 145 for four against Old Boys. Mark Priest and Paul Rutledge both retiring on 35. Old Boys lost only two wickets but were kept to 128 at the end of their allotted 21 overs.

Two of the other matches were very even. Suburban had only three runs to spare against Park and Marist beat

Supporters by five runs. Roger Campbell (Suburban) and Mary Campbell (Sydenham) took the Lion Breweries "player of the day" awards and the recipients of the Canterbury Sports Depot's "personality" awards were Stu Minton (East-Shir-ley) and Kay Wickes (Sydenham). Points:-
