Tyre workers extend leave
More than 200 rubber workers at the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company plant at Papanui have accepted an extra two weeks leave because of slackening demand for new tyres. The works manager,’ Mr A. W. Mellema, said that a lot of new Firestone tyres went to the. new car industry, and most of the assembly plants were having an extended Christmas shutdown, and so demand for tyres had fallen. More than 200 of the 270 rubber workers had accepted the extra two weeks leave now rather than another option, which was to return to
the factory and do maintenance work on a reduced rate of pay with no bonus payments. said Mr Mellema. Most of the workers had leave owing, but a few took the leave without pay. Mr Mellema said that production was expected to resume in two weeks and everything would then be back to normal. The rubber workers were telephoned and asked which option they preferred to take. Most car-assembly plants had to lay off workers in the last eight weeks of last year because of a post-Budget sales slump in new cars.
