Further action on ‘Bangkok!’

Mrs Renee Stanton, the morals crusader, is taking further court action to try to alter the decision in her unsuccessful prosecution last year of the stage show, “Why Not Bangkok!”

Lawyers acting for Mrs Stanton have filed a motion for a High Court review of Judge Fogarty’s decision.

Mrs Stanton brought a private prosecution against four performers in “Why Not Bangkok!” when the show played in Christchurch last October. The four pleaded

not guilty to charges brought under the Summary Offences Act, of intentionally and obscenely exposing their genitals during the show.

The Judge dismissed charges against three without calling on defence evidence. He held that there was no case for them to answer. .He dismissed the case against a fourth defendant after hearing defence evidence.

Mrs Stanton’s motion for a High Court review seeks to have a High Court judge decide whether the ruling of the Judge was correct.

It is unlikely that the case will be heard for several months.
