Athletics Wayne Paul wins 800m Ashburton feature race

, New Zealand's lop 400 m hurdler. Wayne Paul, continued his outstanding recent form to win the feature race, the invitation men's 800 m. at the Ashburton New Year athletics meeting on Saturdav.

After a bad start, the Papanuir Redwood club member was third at the bell, then on the final turn shrugged off the main challengers. Clay Penrose and Peter Williams, to retain the title he won last year. He recorded Imin 52.5 s for the distance. Is outside his best this season. Penrose was second. 0.5 s behind, and Williams third on Imin 53.55.

In the sprints. Joe Leota (Old Boys-Tc Kura) stole the limelight with a brilliant 10.6 s for the senior men's 100 m. He was o.ls outside Trevor Cochrane's provincial record. set in 1973.

Though starting badly on the grass track. Leota soon caught up with the eventual second place-getter. Rhys Dacre. who was timed at 10.95. and went on to record his personal best 100 m time this season. In the 200 m, Leota had a winning time of 21.95. Dacre was second in 22.55. The national 5000 m and 10.000 m champion. Tom Birnie, was similarly impressive in winning the 1500m-3000m double.

In the shorter middle-distance race, he stayed in the middle of a five-member bunch throughout and then "kicked" hard from the 200 m mark to overtake J. Elliot (Olympic) and win in 3min 55.35. In a. field of 30. he stayed in touch with the leaders. Going into the final lap it was a twoway battle between him and Warren Sheddon (Olympic). Birnie passed his rival’ with 250 m left and sprinted to the line in 18min 17s, a time 4s faster than Sheddon's. A Technical middle-distance runner. Colin McDonald, ran a steady race for third place in Bmin 23.55. Three Canterbury records were broken during the full programme of track and field events. Garth Pomroy (South Canterbury) beat the boys’ under 18 javelin mark with a 61.22 m throw.

Tony Fleming and Norman Hawke, both from Ashburton, extended hammer marks. Fleming won the senior in 47.18 m and Hawke, the world men's 70 years hammer record-holder, set a veterans' provincial record with 32.08 m.

Pomroy also won the open men's javelin with 57.60 m. He was followed by John StapletonSmith (55.10m)’. who has been hampered recently by an injury. The best over-all performance of the day came from S. McKee (Technical), who won the senior men's pole vault, the long jump, the triple jump, and was third in the high jump.

Bill Boyd (Papanui-Redwood; won the high jump with a leap of 2.05 m. well ahead of the secondplaced John Hunt (South Canterbury) on 1.90 m.

Allan Halberg (Otago). New Zealand's top-ranked shot-putter, easily won his specialist event. He threw 15.52 m to eclipse a South Canterbury putter. Chris Barrett, by nearly 2m. Barrett avenged this defeat in the discus when he recorded 44.80 m. Halberg was second with 41.58 m. Jan Bishop (Technical) had a clean sweep in the women's field events. She won the javelin (41.62 m the shot put (13.50 m and the discus (41.32 m The Canterbury champion. Bev Peterson (Technical) dominated the women's sprints winning both the 100 m (11.8 s and the 200 m (25.15). The closest women's race was the senior 800 m. which developed into a tussle between Joan Merrifield (University) and a 3000 m specialist, Sue Bruce (New Brighton).. Merrifield made the early pace and after one lap had cleared out to a 10m lead over Bruce but the promising teenager narrowed the gap on the last lap. At the line Merrifield got the - decision, centimetres ahead of the quicker-finishing Bruce. The times were 2min 10.5 s and 2min 10.65, respectively.
