‘Successful, enjoyable’ Duvauchelle show

Fine weather and a happy atmosphere made the Peninsula Horse Show and Pastoral Association's Agricultural and Pastoral show at Duvauchelle yesterday "successful and enjoyable." said the president. Mr D. S. Gunn.

The shearing was the big feature of the show, with the entries up on previous years and the quality high. One of the original organisers of the ListerDalgety Allbreeds Shearing Circuit. Mr T. Rhodes, said the winner of the open. P. Lvon. had put on a "real demonstration of clean power shearing." The patronage was high as the competitions reached their final stages later in the day.

Gate takings were a little more last year, which was as expected, as membership cards had been cut back this year. "We can only cope with so many people, as we are a small show." said Mr Gunn, "and the number of people was just comfortable." Judges of the pony classes, in both rings, commented that the standard of the ponies and riders in the district was by far the best section of horses. "The fun event of the day was (he school pony class." said a judge, Mrs B. H. Heard. The horse entries were down a lot on last year.

All officials — judges, marshalls and the president — commented on the' large number of entries in the pony clubs' competition - eight clubs from the peninsula and Christchurch were represented in the 17 teams who competed. The standard of the sheep was "mixed", said one judge, who thought that the dry spring had affected some of the entries.

Some of the peninsula's cottage industries were represented in the exhibits section, the most popular being the Grand View Rabbit Farm, tent. Mr and Mrs L. J.. Day, who have been farming rabbits on their 13-acre block for 12 months, had an extremely busy day with children, parents, farmers and policemen who all came to see the Angora, Californian white, chinchilla and four other breeds of rabbit on display. Horse championships were:— Hunter pony. — Amanda Brown’s Wellington: reserve champion, Julia Savill's Sashar. Hunter hack. — Mrs A. K. McMillan’s Canasta: reserve champion. Lisa Morrissey's Polka.
