Amin’s bank accounts frozen

NZPA-Reuter Kampala The Kampala bank accounts of the ousted dictator, Idi Amin, and those of hundreds of his supporters have been frozen on the orders of Uganda’s President and Finance Minister, Mr Milton Obote. The latest Government Gazette said that more than 1000 accounts of individuals, shops and companies had been frozen, including Amin’s account with the Libyan Arab Uganda Bank, frozen on December 16, and those of some former Ministers under Amin.

The Gazette did not say why the accounts had been frozen or what sums were affected. Banks mentioned included the Governmentowned Uganda Commercial

Bank, Grindlays, Barclays, and the Standard Bank.

Among other accounts ordered frozen were those of Amin’s former Finance Minister, Moses Ali, the Information Minister, Colonel Juma Oris, and the Culture Minister, Mary Astles Senkatwka. Amin fled Kampala in April 1979, as a combined force of Ugandan exiles and Tanzanian soldiers marched on the capital. He is now believed to be living in Saudi Arabia.

Four months ago. the Libyan Arab Uganda Bank was closed pending investigation amid Ugandan Government allegations that Libya, a staunch supporter of Amin’s, was arming, training and financing guerrillas fighting the Obote Government.
