Research ship due tomorrow

A Japanese geological research vessel is due to arrive at Lyttelton at 9 a.m. tomorrow. She is the 1821-ton Hakurei Maru, owned by the Metal Mining Agency of Japan. The 87m-long Hakurei Maru will stay at port for five days before sailing to a survey area in the Ross Sea. where she will work until February 12 when she will sail for Sydney. On board the vessel are 20 crew and 20 scientists, the chief scientist being Dr Shunji Sato. The ship's survey programme is promoted by the Japanese Government and is being conducted by the Technology Research Centre of the Japan National Oil Corporation. The ‘scientists will study the geological and the geophysical features of the Ross Basin. The survey is being carried out in accordance with the Antarctic Treaty. All findings from the research programme will be made available by the Japanese Government.

While at Lyttelton the ship's master, Captain Hideaki Okumura, and Dr Sato will pay courtesy calls to local maritime and scientific organisations. The ship will also pick up supplies. The Hakurei Maru was built in 1974 to investigate mineral resources on the continental shelves round the Japanese archipelago and in deep-sea areas.
