NZPA Newcastle, England The Danish trawler master and European Parliament member, Kent Kirk, flew home . yesterday, £30,000 (about $NZ65,000) worse off but still determined to challenge Britain’s fishing laws. Captain Kirk was arrested and his trawler impounded at North Shields by the
Royal Navy atter he began trawling in herring grounds subject to hew British fishing restrictions. He intends appealing through the British courts, and even to the European Court of Justice, in Luxemburg, against his conviction and £30,000 fine for illegally fishing in British waters. Magistrates at North Shields fined Captain Kirk
for a "flagrant and deliberate breach of our law,” and warned he would be jailed for 12 months if the fine was not paid immediately. The Dane who has conducted a personal crusade against Britain’s 12-mile limit, handed a cheque to the court. He had denied contravening the Sea Fish Order, 1982.
