Provincial B teams draw
The three-day cricket match between Canterbury B and Central Districts B ended in a draw at Horton Park, Blenheim, yesterday. Cran Bull’s declaration set Central Districts the target of 272 runs in 206 min on the superb batting track, but at stumps Central had reached
only 173 for seven. Central had made a good start in its second innings and was 50 for none at lunch. However, both openers, Peter Verhoek (28) and Ron Hart (35). went soon after the break and the target slipped away. Canterbury bowled accurately and the fielding, a
feature of the team's tour, was again good. With Central losing its sixth wicket at 127, about an hour before stumps, Canterbury still had a chance to force a win, but the seventh batsman, Murray Jamieson (26 not out), saw Central through. Canterbury’s left-armer, Gary MacDonald bowled well, with Bull setting attacking fields, and he took three for 46 off 24 overs.
Earlier, Canterbury had taken its second innings from the overnight score of 157 for three to 283 for five, at which it declared. Paul McEwan (59 not out) and Graham Kench (50 not out) put on 119 runs in just 70min in an unbroken sixth wicket stand. McEwan hit eight fours and Kench, six fours.
