Flood hampers Rakaia questionnaire
Flooding of the Rakaia River is keeping away some fishermen whom the North Canterbury Catchment- Board wants to question about the river.
The two-week survey is one of the last steps in the biggest recreational study done by a New Zealand catchment authority. Findings will go into a Rakaia resource report due for release on March 31. Fifteen student workers started handing out questionnaires on Thursday to passers-by at different river access points from the mouth to Glenariffe and the Lake Coleridge power station outlet.
The board's sociologist. Ms K. Saville-Smith, said questionnaires were being given to every fourth passer-by at some points, and at other places everyone was handed a form in an attempt to counteract the effect of bad river conditions. “The river is really high at the moment and a bit dirty, so it is not really good fishing." she said. "We have gat to start some time so we just hope we will catch the few good fishing days among the rest of the time."' Surveying was due to finish next Thursday and resume for another week later in the month, but if river conditions improved it would continue uninterrupted. “No catchment board in New Zealand has done a Meat steady PA Wellington The meat schedule of prices to farmers will be unchanged for the coming week, the Meat Board has announced.
really good recreational study before.” said Ms Saville-Smith. It had been a little rushed because of time limits but should form a good basis for the Rakaia management plan. Apart from one incident where some workers had locked the car keys and questionnaires in the boot of their vehicle for two hours, the survey was working well and was’ meeting a good public response. The study had. also included a “fishability" experiment where anglers volunteered to assess different stretches of water they fished, and a preliminary survey of Christchurch recreational groups that used the river.
Board workers still hope for time to take more site observations of river use activities, and aerial photographs for "counting heads."
