STONEYHURST TIMBERS LIMITED PHONE BELFAST 8879 STC REPLACEMENT COOK STRAIT CABLE REGISTRATION OF INTEREST NEW ZEALAND ELECTRICITY, a Division of the’ Ministry of Energy, is investigating whether there is a need for the early placing of 1,2 or 3 replacement HVDC (high voltage direct current) submarine cables across Cook Strait to maintain the integrity of the existing HVDC link between the South and North Islands of New Zealand. This link has three cables (one for a spare) nearing the end of their life. Investigations, which include the examination of an existing cable which is damaged and a seabed survey of the route corridor, are expected to be concluded by February, 1983. A firm decision on the need fur replacement cables and on the timing of such a project will not be made until all relevant information has been obtained and considered. The contract would not be split and would be for cable manufacture, delivery, laying, terminations, testing, commissioning, spare cable, terminations, joints and possibly a maintenance contract. It is intended that the cable should be rated at 1200 or 1320 amps, 270 kV DC or 375 kV DC and be supplied in single lengths of 40 kilometres each. Registration of interest is sought from cable manufacturers and layers, and must include comment on the proposed specifications and other matters which affect the timing of the project.
