Situations Vacant UNIVERSITY OF PAPUA NEW GUINEA VACANCIES APPLICATIONS are invited : from suitably qualified persons lor the following positions1. DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL AND . ADMINISTRATIVE STUDIES PROFESSOR Should be an established scholar with specialisation in one or more fields of politics and'or administrative studies. Courses are offered at all undergraduate levels in the fields of Comparative Politics. Papua New Guinea and Pacific Politics. Public Administration and Public Policy. Political Economy of New States. Political Theory and International Politics. A modest graduate programme is maintained, the appointee will be expected to promote interdisciplinary and extension studies. He assumes special responsibility for the training and academic preparation of national academics. The Department presently consists of a total of seven academic staff members. The day to day administration is in the hands of a chairperson elected by the members of the Department. 2. DEPARTMENT OF LAW SENIOR I ECTU R ER /LECTURER (2 positions) Should have wide experience in the teaching of Law. Preference will be given to candidates who have taught Torts and Contracts. Administrative Law, Consitutional Law, Criminal Law and Criminal procedure. 3. DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY LECTURER IN PATHOLOGY Should be specialised in any branch of Pathology (includ’ing Microbiology). Wide teaching experience, preferably in the tropics, is required. The successful candidate will be expected to co-ordinate the teaching of Pathology to Dentistry students, to participate in the teaching of Pathology to undergraduate and Postgraduate Medical students. Although previous experience in oral pathology is not essential, an Interest in oral pathology and teaching of Dental students will be of definite advantage. Participation in clinical work and leaching oral pathology will be expected. 4. DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY MEDICINE SENIOR LECTURER/LECTURER Should have postgraduate qualifications and experience, preferably in a developing country in a relevant field: Public Health. Epidemiology. Health Services Research, or with disease control programmes. Current departmental activities include: Research on Primary Health Care. Leprosy and Tuberculosis Programme. a Study of the Ok Ted! Mine upon health status, and Research on Acute Respiratory Infections. The first position will be based in the Eastern Highlands Province and will involve the teaching of Rural Health Practice to undergrates: the second position will be based in Port Moresby and will involve the teaching of both undergraduate and postgraduate students. QUALIFICATIONS Professor: Candidates must be distinguished scholars with international recognition. Successful applicants will be expected to provide intellectual and academic leadership. Senior Lecturer: Ph.D or equivalent and long and outstanding achievement in teaching and research. Ability to take organisational and administrative responsibilities. Lecturer: Higher Degree and Demonstrated ability in teaching and research at University level. .SALARY SCALES 1. Professor: K 21.960 per annum. 2. Senior Lecturer: K 18.860 per annum. 3. Lecturer 2: K 17.010 per annum. 4. Lecturer 1: K 15.160. (KI equals SNZI.79) OTHER CONDITIONS OF SERVICE The successful applicant will be offered a contract for a three-year appointment. In addition to the salaries quoted above, the main benefits include: a gratuity entitlement based on 24 per cent of salary earned payable in instalments or lump sum, which is taxed at a flat rate of 2 per cent, support for approved research; rentfree accommodation: appointment and repatriation airfares for appointee and dependants: financial assistance towards the cost of transporting personal effects to and from PNG: 6 weeks annual recreation leave with home airfares available after each 18 months of continuous service: generous education subsidies for children attending schools in PNG or overseas: a salary continuation scheme to cover extended illness or disability. Appointments for up to one or two years may be arranged. Applicants who wish to arrange secondment from their home institutions will be welcomed.
