Pickers’ pay

Sir.—Who stands to gain in the berry battle? Does the Labourers’ Union want a share of the pie from transitory seasonal workers? Surely injustice should be dealt with, if and when it occurs. Dishonesty comes in all shapes and sizes after all! Why should the employment of industrious workers be threatened by slackers and agitators? Do they want to coerce growers into automation? To force up the price of fruit? Or put growers out of business? Parents or guardians should be able to protect young pickers from extortion and perhaps see if they pick rows cleanly, throw no fruit, and avoid foul language. These individual comments are based on close observation over’ 10 seasons of happy picking by family members.—Yours, etc.. MRS J. NIHONIHO. January 5, 1983.
