Carriers ‘endangered’

PA Wellington New Zealand’s town carriers will become an “endangered species”as a result of proposed legislation to remove the 150 km rail protection limit, says the Road Transport Association’s president, Mr J. L. Stuart. The removal of the 150 km limit, as proposed in the Transport Amendment Bill

(No. 5), would lead to freight moving from rail as shippers sought cither ways of moving their goods, Mr Stuart said. “This decline in freight, said to be 18 per cent according to the Minister of Transport, will mean much less business for our town carriers who rely on carting from the railhead for a large proportion of their livelihoods,” he said.

“As their business declines we may see town - carriers going out of business or laying off staff. Either way, there will be redundancies.

“Proposed Government action will make the town carrier, so much a part of city life for decades, an endangered species like the takahe or the kakapo,” Mr Stuart said.
