Rene Kirk: a friend to hundreds
A familiar figure at the St Albans swimming pool for 40 years, Mrs Renee Kirk, died in Christchurch recently aged 82. A life member of the club, Mrs Kirk devoted thousands of hours to coaching and pool duty. She served for a period on the Canterbury Swimming Centre and received the centre’s service award for her work. Later in life she received a volunteer instructor award under the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association’s volunteer coaching scheme.
At the age of 70 she taught herself to swim and used her new found ability to exercise regularly. At the age of 75 she taught herself to dive.
Around the pool she was affectionately known as Aunty Renee to the hundreds of children who used the pool. Her cheerful manner made her particularly popular With children.
