P class yachting title

PA Auckland An Auckland East yachtsman, Craig Monk, won the Tanner Cup national P class championship at Murrays Bay, Auckland, yesterday. The 15-year-old Monk sailed the 15-year-old Staccato in the contest and by some quirk of fate the sail number was 15. In addition, Monk's wish for a 15-knot wind for yesterday morning's fifth race was not only

answered, but the wind strength doubled in the afternoon to make the contest safe. Monk, who could muster only fourth and fifth placings on light airs on the first day. came into his own as the wind increased, registering four wins. Scott Adam, another Auckland East representative, gained his sixth successive second placing in the contest to finish runner-up. Richard Taylor (Otago) was third.
