Men beat and rob youth
Four men beat and robbed a youth, aged 17. near the corner of Tuam Street and Stanmore Road last evening after meeting him at a hotel and leaving with him in their car.
They stopped near the corner about 10.30 p.m. on the pretext of going to another hotel, the police said. The four men then dragged the youth from the car and into an alley where they beat him and robbed him of $l5O. He suffered facial cuts and bruising in the attack. A taxi-driver who arrived on the scene soon afterwards alerted the police and called a St John ambulance. The youth was taken to Christchurch Hospital and admitted. A St John Ambulance spokesman said the youth had been “well done over."
The police said the men had befriended the youth at the hotel when they found he had a lot of money. “It looks as if they decided to rob hima police spokesman said. The C. 1.8. were treating the incident as aggravated robbery, and were still investigating the matter early this morning.
