Double likely for Wilkinson

The Beckenham skip. /Th Wally Wilkinson, is set to 1 > complete a double in the two ' ■W-main Christchurch holiday bowls tournaments. Last week. Wilkinson convincingly won the Christmas fours final and at Burnside today he will be one of the semi-finalists in the New Year triples, a title which he is defending. Wilkinson and his team of Arnie Spicer and Geoff Wilkinson. who partnered him in the Christmas event, went through their post-section games yesterday with three decisive wins, and must be the favoured combination. Wilkinson will not know his semi-final opponent until about midday today. It will be the winner of the only game this morning which is between Arnold Memory' (Woolston W.M.C.) and Jack Andrews (Christchurch Richmond M.S.A.), who are a round benind. Memory, too, played well

vesterdav and his team of Arthur Bellamore and Murray King, on form, looks the one most likely to test Wilkinson. Andrews, however, cannot be under-estimated. He played some outstanding bowls in steering his team of Jim Hecker and Terry Kennedy to a 19-18 win over John Pugh (Fendalton) yesterday. The other semi-final will be between Ken Shivas (Burnside) and Arch Ravenwood (Rangiora), who has been the surprise package of the tournament. Ravenwood and his team of Bill Chatterton and Fred Dobby trailed John Gill (Papanui) 12-3 after six ends of their third round game, however, some inaccurate driving cost the Papanui team dearly. Ravenwood, helped greatly by a five on the 12th end, recovered to be level at 15-15 and won the last end, by two.

Ravenwood had fewer worries in the next round. He led all the way to finish with a clear-cut win against Colin Manson (Shirley). Poor driving was also the downfall of another favoured skip. Warren Fitchett. He was 12-8 up on Shivas until he missed with three drives and dropped a six on the third-to-last end. Shivas. whose team . is Ray Marks and Max Davis, also won the next two ends to win 17-12. Post-section resultsFirst round D. Crombie (Fendalton) 14. H. Scrimgeour (Rangiora) 3. Second round A.
