Cricket fans robbed of TV coverage

NZPA London British cricket fans were robbed of the first live television pictures of an overseas match yesterday when England .looked like sliding to defeat against Australia in the fifth and final test. The British Broadcasting Corporation (8.8. C. had said it was prepared to spend £ 25.000 to relay live pictures from Sydney if England showed signs of scraping to a 2-2 draw in the series to retain the Ashes. But the 8.8. C. scrapped a transmission of yesterday s play after the Australian batsmen refused to oblige and stayed firmly at the crease. Coverage was slashed

to two, hours — at a cost of £ 10,000 - and ended at lunch when the Australians were 194 for four, an over-all lead of 271 runs. The broadcast had been expected to keep more than one million Britons out of bed, prompting the masscirculation “Daily Mirror” to comment that the nation traditionally turned to the 8.8. C. at times of crisis such as Dunkirk and the fall of Singapore. “The nation sought not comfort, but the truth.” it said. “The Australians have come a long way since we reshaped their boomerangs into cricket bats. Not only can they give us a game, but they can occasionally beat us."
