Northern dominates first day’s play

PA Hamilton Northern Districts had much the better of the first day of a Shell Trophy cricket match at Hamilton yesterday when after dismissing Canterbury for 150 they went to 74 for one by stumps. The outcome of the day’s play justified the decision of the Northern Districts’ captain, John Parker, to ask Canterbury to bat when he won the toss. He wanted to give his bowlers the chance of exploiting any assistance from the pitch and they responded well. Canterbury never recovered from the bad start when in 55 minutes it lost the wickets of David Boyle and Vaughan Brown for 20 and another batsman, the opener, Peter Rattray, was having an elbbw treated after being struck by a rising ball in the very first over, bowled by Mark Carrington.

Carrington was again the chief destroyer of the opposition batting. He took the first two wickets, Boyle brilliantly caught one handed by Stu Gillespie at third slip and Brown clean bowled, and went on to finish with four for 23 from 14 overs.

There was good support by two other quicker bowlers,

Gillespie, who took two for 36, and Karl Treiber. who went unrewarded, and by the left-arm spinner, Cliff Dickeson, who kept pegging away accurately in 22.3 overs for four for 49. Splendid catching also helped towards Canterbury's cheap dismissal 35 minutes before the tea adjournment. -

The sheet anchor role was played by the opener, Bob Carter, who batted 130 minutes for his 28, while the most enterprise came from Rod Latham, who went confidently for his shots in compiling 49 before being well caught at cover by Barry Cooper off Carrington soon after lunch. Latham hit eight boundaries in his best knock of the Shell Trophy competition so far.

Lindsay Crocker was the first Northern batsman to go when he was bowled lbw by the leg break bowler, David Stead, the fifth used by the Canterbury captain, Richard Leggat.

Crocker had looked good as he made his way to his 33 and the opening stand of 71 was Northern Districts’ best of the season so far. A tailender, Treiber, sent in as nightwatchman with 17 mintues to go in good light,
