New chair established

PA Dunedin New Zealand’s first chair of general practice will be established in the University of Otago next year. The foundation professor will Dr John Campbell Murdoch, aged 40, at present a senior lecturer in general practice in the University of Dundee, Scotland. His appointment was announced at a University Council meeting.

The new chair will be known as the Elaine Gurr chair of general practice in recognition of the Auckland doctor who set up a trust to fund the post. Dr Gurr is an Otago graduate who qualified in 1923 and practised for many years in Auckland. There are sections of general practice in both the Auckland and Otago medical schools, but neither has an established chair in this discipline.
